 HS SUGGESTION 2019- PRECIS WRITING

Man is inquisitive by nature. He seeks to know the unknown, to see the unseen. Books and pictures fail to give him full satisfaction; he wants to know, see with his own eyes. That is why he is so fond of traveling. There are various means used for travel—trains, cars, airplanes. Some even prefer to take sea cruises. But the best is to travel by cycle. This enables us to get in direct touch with all we pass through or meet. Travelling has great educational value. It gives us first-hand knowledge of the places through which we' pass; their physical features, their people, their crops and minerals, their natural beauty. We can learn much about the manners and customs of different people. These are lessons more interesting and more effective than what we see on television or what we get from books. We read about the majesty Of the Himalayas and the vastness of the ocean, of the original tribes and the lives of the village people in the interior. But we cannot have any clear conception of them unless we see them with our own eyes. That is why educational tours are encouraged everywhere in today's world. Travelling gives us pleasure too. Even a short trip to an ordinary place relieves the monotony and fills the mind with joy. We can go to a health resort and can recover our health. Thus traveling combines the pleasure of adventure with the joy of knowledge and experience. (250 words)- HS- 15

It is almost impossible to escape from advertisements. Hoardings stare down at us from the sides of the roads; crude neon signs wink above shops; jingles and slogans assault our ears. All these are twentieth-century developments which have grown side by side with the spread of education and technical advances in radio and TV.

Advertising assaults not only our eyes and ears but also our pockets. Its critics point out that in this country 1.6 percent of the national income is spent on advertising and this advertising actually raises the cost of products. When a housewife buys a pound of flour, S percent of what she pays goes to some advertiser or others, even if she has not bothered to ask the shopkeeper for a particular brand. If she buys a named brand of aspirin, up to 29 percent of what she pays may represent the cost of advertising the name.
These amounts seem a great deal to pay for the questionable benefits of advertising, but there are a few things to be said in its favor. Though some things cost more because of advertising, some things cost less. Newspapers, magazines, commercial radio, and television — all carry advertisements. The money they receive from the advertisers helps them to lower the cost of production. In this way we get information and entertainment at lower prices than would otherwise have to be charged. Therefore, what we lose on the swings we gain on the roundabouts. Apart from this very important consideration, advertising to some extent ensures that a product will maintain its quality. It also gives rise to competition among manufacturers, which gives the customers a wider choice. Competition may even succeed, in some cases' in reversing the influence of advertising and causing a reduction in price. (Council sample-iii)

The saving of certain wild animals from extinction has for many years been a problem for zoologists and other specialists, but more recently the problem has become so acute and has received so much publicity, the most people are now concerned about it. This may at first seem strange because one of the most satisfying developments of the last few years has been the passing of strict laws to protect Wild animals and the consequent decline in the hunting of big game for sport. Why is it, then that some rare wild animals are still threatened with extinction and even some of the less rare ones are rapidly declining in number?
One reason is the 'march of civilization'. When an area is wholly cleared of vegetation to make room for new towns, factory sites or hydroelectric plants, the natural home of special species is destroyed. The displaced animals must either migrate to another area or perish. Even the clearing of land for a road or an airfield may involve 'pushing back' the jungle and the smaller the area in which wild animals complete for a living, the smaller the number that can hope to survive. Civilization brings too, swift and easy transport and so assists those who are determined to break the various protective laws. Thieves can elude the forest wardens, shoot an elephant for its tusks, a rhinoceros for its horn, or a dove for its meat, and be miles away from the site of crime before the dead or dying victim is even discovered.

It is sad to reflect that civilization which can bring so many benefits to people who have previously known only hunger and misery, brings also facilities for the heartless criminals who, for material gain, will slaughter some harmless animals and threaten the disappearance of its kind from the earth forever. A tram stalled by a power cut sprang to life without the driver in his cabin and smashed nine cars as it hurtled down Ballygunge Phari, chased by two young men who got in and stopped it 300 meters away. Drivers and passengers emerged from the pile-up with cuts, scrapes, and bruises amid screams for help from others who witnessed the driverless tram plowing through the rush-hour traffic on Thursday morning.

Slum-dwellers Dinesh Lal and Jaggu Kapadia were the saviors, catching up with the runaway train after a 100-meter sprint and & fumbling with the controls for a while before finding a lever that brought tram No. 516 to a halt.
'The tram was being taken for repairs and had exited the Gariahat depot at 9.30 am to take a U-turn and enter the premises again when the power cut occurred. The engine was apparently in first gear and so started moving the moment power supply was restored," police said quoting an official of the Calcutta Tramways Company.

Tram driver Ram Sharan, who has been employed with the company for nearly three decades, was reported missing after the incident. Officers at Gariahat police station said he would be charged with negligence.
'The driver had stepped down to check if something was wrong with the resistance box. Since there was no driver inside, the tramcar moved past the junction from where it would have taken a loop to re-enter the depot. It went straight and rammed into the cars", a senior CTC official said. (Council sample- ii)

Vidyasagar had both the originality of a genius and the sterling strength of a heroic character. He thought out a new technique of teaching Sanskrit more easily to beginners and wrote a series of primers in the Sanskrit language and literature adapted to modern needs. He also arranged for the collection and preservation of old Sanskrit books. In Bengali prose, Vidyasagar's work was a landmark. He evolved an elegant, although a bit too stately and chaste style of writing which impressed everybody.

Between 1847 and 1863, he wrote a series of books in Bengali which became classics to the students of literature. In these, he drew his material impartially from the Indian epics and popular tales as well as from western fables and biographies. His 'Bengali Primer' for beginners is even today in household use.
But Vidyasagar was no mere scholar or man of letters. As an educational reformer, he opened the Sanskrit college to Non-Brahmin boys and provided for classical scholars some English Education as well. As an administrator of vision, he rendered splendid service in his capacity of government inspector and in four districts he organized a total of 35 girls' schools and 20 model schools. He was closely associated from its early days with the institution which now bears his name and which under his fostering care became the outstanding example of a non-official, secular and popular institution for higher education with purely Indian teaching staff. He was equally interested in women's higher education and was secretary to the Bethune School for some time. (256 words)
