Pollution- Introduction, and Types of Pollution

Pollution means pollution of the environment. This is of three types-
  • Sound pollution
  • Air pollution and
  • Water pollution.

Countless sounds always beat our eardrums. The human voice, sounds of instruments chattering of the birds, burking of dogs, electric chilling sounds of the car and different automobiles and different other natural and artificially made sounds always keep us in excitement. Very often they surpass the average limit that our ears can accept. According to the scientist, the human ear can beat with at least 40 to 50 decibels of sound and not more than that. Unfortunately in our urban day to day life we are forced to hear sound at a range of nearly 90 decibels. It has been found that persons working for long in factories under the roaring sound of the gigantic machinery become in the long run deep in the ear. Experiments have proved this true. They also lose their memory and mental ability.

History
The term pollution is relatively a new term. It came in work after the Second World War. The atom bombs and several other deadly chemical weapons were used in the Second World War. Hiroshima and Nagasaki the two thickly populated cities of Japan were completely destroyed. It had polluted the air and water of the world. No living creature remained immune from the destructive forces of these weapons, especially of the atom bomb. All flora and faunas were destroyed the poisonous effect of the bomb was so severe that it spread from one country to another one generation to another. Even after long 40 years of the word the deformed and diseased babies are born in Hiroshima Nagasaki. The scientist and physicians held the effect of atom bombs responsible for this. The world looked at this consequence with horror and hence till this day of Hiroshima Day is observed to commemorate this painful incident the greatest crime against mankind. Hence the question of pollution has become a serious concern for all of us.

Pollution - Nature, and Effects

Sound pollution causes slow damage while water pollution and air pollution cause immediate loss. Water is the most essential thing in life. We cannot live without water. In India, especially water has a different status. It is related to our religious life with our faith and belief. River Ganga is the example of that. We consider its water as holy and inviolable and hence want to purify us with it. We drink it, take bath and even feel purified at its very touch. But its water is very much polluted nowadays.
From her sources throughout her long coats, there are thousands and thousands of factories on both her banks which through their dust and other segregated items in the river without any consideration and this has made the water very much polluted. According to the scientist of the water river, Ganga is now so much polluted that it has become harmful for human health. Once upon a time the water of river Ganga and Haridwar was pure and pious one. Now the wastage of the famous pharmaceutical company I.D.P.L. has made the water very much polluted. Throughout India pollution of the river water has become a vital problem. What to speak of our country, even the river water of U.S.A. has become polluted and this has caused great anxiety among the people of America.

Air Pollution
Likewise, the smoke exhausted from the factories, from the diesel used in the conveyance, the dust of the city life, all have polluted our air, high up in the sky. Like water, air is a must for the human being to live. What we inhale through the air are all harmful to human health. The smoke coming out of the factories contains Carbon dioxide, Carbon Monoxide, Arsenic, Nickel, Crude oil, Manganese, Chromium and Cadmium and many other like gasses. They are all poisons. How can man live within the poisonous environment?

Cause of Pollutions
Moreover, as civilization advanced and pollution increased. For making our advanced city thousands and thousands of the trees were cut off to serve human need. The forest thus becomes clean, but at the same time, it also gave birth to pollution since the jungles and trees were so long maintaining the balance and parity in nature. This has distributed the ecological balance. The term ‘Ecology’ has come from the Greek word ‘Oikos’ which means house. Thus Ecology is the study of houses or in another way it is the science of Environment. Cutting of trees and clean off of jungles, causes land erosions changes the courses of monsoon and extend desserts. Its inevitable consequences are drought and flood which cause thousands and thousands of people to die a sad death. Earthquake becomes a frequent phenomenon.

Ways To Prevent Pollution
This is so for the nature of the problem is concerned. The man has considered this problem from the scientific point of view. And hence he has become more and more serious of the cause and effect of this pollution problem. Some 50 years back man never cared to know the term ecological balance or of the ecological science. Now it has become a recognized branch of scientific knowledge and we are getting conscious of what the ecologist tell us about our environment. It is for this reason that in the U.S.A. and other parts of Europe laws have been enacted to stop sound pollution some 20 years back. Even diesel has to be purified before use there are there are laws regarding the wastage and garbage of the factories. In the recent past, both the central government and some state government has introduced an environment ministry in their Cabinet. Some laws have been enacted by these ministries. Adequate measures have been taken in West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha and some other places to bring back the ecological balance by creating new forests. Under the inspiration from the former prime minister of India late Rajiv Gandhi, ‘the Ganga action plan’ was introduced to free river Ganges from pollution. In West Bengal laws have been enacted prohibiting the unhygienic use of Motor horns and diesel gas. The big companies have been warned about their wastage that is thrown into river Ganges.

In fact fight against pollution depends upon human consciousness. It requires all-around cooperation and general awareness of its evil consequence. With great disgust, we have seen that the big companies still through their dust and wastage into river Ganga. They pay no attention to the government warning. Likewise, while trees are being planted in one hand, they are being cut off with business interests. If these things continue shall simply give our posterity a barren the and the polluted world to live in-  and for that, we ourselves will only be responsible.

  • Create awareness
  • Follow proper waste disposal
  • Tree planting
  • Reduce the introduction of harmful gases into the air
  • Make an efficient drainage system
  • Reduce the use of plastic bags

Conclusion
Everyone should try to reduce pollution in their own way. Pollution control is very essential for our humanity, where everybody should play a positive initiative. It helps to repose the environment clean and reduces pollution from our surroundings.
